Chunking Assignments

11/19/2018

Sometimes we procrastinate because tasks or assignments seem too big or overwhelming. One way to conquer a large task is to break it down into a few smaller sections. Breaking the information up into smaller pieces will make the assignment easier to manage by making it less intimidating and easier to start. This is referred to as chunking.

Step #1: Understand the Assignment

  • Look over the requirements of the project carefully. What type of writing assignment is it? i.e., research essay, literature review, response paper, presentation etc.

Step #2: List all the tasks involved in completing the assignment

Research Essay Task List

  • Select the topic and generate possible thesis statements
  • Find sources
  • Read and take notes
  • Decide on the thesis statement
  • Create and outline
  • Write a rough first draft
  • Revise and rewrite
  • Review

Step 3: Set deadlines for each task

  • Work backwards from the due date
  • Estimate how long each task will take

Step 4: Schedule time to complete each task

  • In your calendar, indicate what days and times you will work on each task up until the deadline date.
  • Making a commitment and intentionally blocking time to complete each step will help you keep on top of completing each task in a timely manner.

Note: It may be helpful to make a chart with each task listed beside the date it needs to be completed. This will help keep you on track. If you like to cross completed items off lists, you can do so!
